TEENAGERS AND SOCIAL MEDIA

......Hey, are you on Facebook and Instagram?

I like Snapchat tho

Twitter is boring

That song I told you about the other time, I have seen the video on YouTube......

Hmmmmmm

Internet is a great blessing to this generation and also a danger to it.

We are actually in the era when access to data or information is very easy once you have a smartphone and Subscription on it. (The world is at your palm)

Over time, lots of parents have been complaining to me about the challenges the face seeing their teenagers spend long night surfing the internet instead of reading their books.

I could feel the pain of these parents watching their children spend their money on data subscription instead of books.

Funny enough these teenagers spend those times online checking out all their social media accounts.

Their lives are now been influenced by what they observe and see on social media.
Their thinking are been shaped by the kind of stories they read on social media especially Facebook.

These teens are comfortable reading romantic stories on Facebook, view erotic pictures of celebrities on Instagram and seeing videos of trending music, movies and porn as the case may be.

Yea, I observed that there is this urge or push that always call them back to these social media which they don't get from parents and relatives.

This urge makes them come back for more and demand for more as they spend more time searching to satisfy their desires.

One truth we should know is that these teenagers are very inquisitive and are ready to spend their times with anything and on anything that gives them the answers to their questions.

They need attention
They need to know
They need satisfaction on all their desires.

These challenge with the times teenagers spend on social media has increased the rate of examination malpractice in secondary Schools and tertiary institutions.

Students having spent most of their times on the internet now believe that the device they have can also be of help to pass their examinations as such they don't trust their brains.

Ok!

Research has it that 95% of teenagers has a smartphone device and 45% of them say they are online almost constantly.

85% of them use YouTube
72% are on Instagram
69% of them do Snapchat
51% have an account on Facebook
32% are on Twitter
3% don't use any of these above

This survey was done 2014-2015.

You can see to yourself the rate at which our teenagers spend most of their times.

Most of the adults I know spend their time on social media just on Facebook but the reverse is the case with teenagers.

I know by now the same question that is boggling my mind might have started disturbing your mind,

How do we arrest this disaster that we are facing now?

• Should we stop buying smartphones for our teenagers?

• Do we limit their access to Internet and how?

• Do we give bounds to our teenagers from entering any social media platforms?

• What do we engage them with that will reduce their time on internet and social media?

• Should parents be on social media and introduce their teenager, so they can stay in control?

• Should parents read vast as to answer the questions of their teens?

• Can the government place some policies on teens entering social media and the kind of information they see?

• What role do the parents, school and churches has to play in this challenge?

Your contributions will help us change a lot of things in our various communities.
